#(un)Filtered

The consequence of filters is that to a large extent, we no longer know whats real. 

Real is now a luxury. It’s the world we live in. 

With a stellar number of modification apps just a finger tip away, it is easy to sugarcoat (filter) aspects of our lives. We could even alter our appearances, and create a whole aesthetic for our ‘virtual’ reality. 

Do not let your adorning be external – the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear – but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Everybody wants the #livingmybestlife moment. We curate feeds for the consumption of others, painting a gallery of pictures that cause an eruption of likes and complimentary reactions and comments. PS: there is absolutely nada wrong with that!

My question is if your followers meet you in person, will your online persona, visuals and aesthetic match what they see, and who they meet? Is there synergy in who you present online and who you are? Will they meet a hollow soul or a person with substance? Will they be fed value by scrolling though the index of conversations had with you? Will they be intrigued by your person or your showmanship? An even more important question, why do you care? Do you feel the need to create an alternate reality just so you have content to share? Are you content with the actual content of your real life? Do you actually see yourself as #FIYAH, #BAE, #couplegoals and all the other popular hashtags we chase after? Are you whole all by yourself, without the likes, or are the likes fillers for an empty soul? 

The thing is, you cannot filter life. It’ll be a shame if your IG life is more #LIT than your real life. At some point, you will have to look in the mirror and face you. At some point, you’ll have to come to terms with who you are and make tangible moves to add value to your everyday life. At some point, you’ll have to accept you. 

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.

Sometimes we just have to stop, take stock and ask the hard questions — why do I do what I do? Am I living in real time i.e. present, or am I in motion for virtual content?

If you find yourself in competition with others, incl. online personalities, remember that you are not the only one smart enough to use filters 🤪.
