The verdict of the peoples court i.e. the internet is that Mr. Jussie Smollett is guilty of causing emotional distress to a mob of people.

I say emotional because that is the lifeline for which the world responds to everything. Its the knee jerk reaction that drives/fuels the machine that is the media โ€” social media.

The same deep seated, fiery and wild emotions that parted the sea for Mr. Smollett, flooding our timelines with hashtags that cried out for justice, are the same that leave the virtual picket fences empty, and close up the sea for him to drown.

In todays world, one stanza from my favourite childhood lullaby โ€”Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star has more staying power than a supportive crowd.

Its scary how quickly the tides turn. All of a sudden his issues are his alone and the hurtful, funny memes appear. The roasting begins. Unforgiveness erupts.

Yea, as a people, we are pretty unforgiving. As a people, we are risky business. People will jump before the facts and then cry wolf as the โ€˜truthโ€™ unfolds. If you have no real grasp of intent or purpose you’ll get lost in the pack; and if I may add, you have much to lose โ€”like your time, and your mind because all of a sudden, you feel used.

A movement is sensational. Being a โ€˜part ofโ€™, gives a high โ€”probably the most expensive drug out there. It exalts everything our emotions are tied to, and we are delirious from the feel good hormones of being a part of #(something).

In a world that gravitates more towards fads than facts, we generally donโ€™t stop to ask. Am I doing this to populate my feed and seem in touch and relevant, or am I doing this because it matters and I actually care. I care about the issue, the people involved and the aftermath. I care about the whole story.

I feel bad for everyone – both sides. Myself included ‘cuz I definitely got emotionally invested. There is always right and wrong. Always. But dare I say, I am still recovering from the whiplash caused by how flash-like fast the tides turned. Meh. We live in a rather funny world.

So here I am thinking about how screwed we would be if like the world, Jesus dropped his cause like a hot potato because of hearsay, and I am also wondering if Jesus ever felt used. hmmmm.

Am I ever so grateful that I serve a God who is intentional, purposeful, forgiving, merciful, kind, loving and JUST. For all our sakes, it is worth shouting about a God who is not fickle.

Happy monyaaaaaaay! ๐Ÿ˜

  1. Such an appropriate and timely message. So important to pause, think and reflect rather than passing snap judgments on a situation with limited information. Thank God for a God who is steadfast and not fickle.
