Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I love everything about it, even the aspects that could very easily get muddled in stress.
The air is different around this season, almost like joy blankets the earth. It could be the communal happiness from the warmth of being wrapped up in cozy folds of family and friends. Or maybe its all the vibrant fragrances and sights tap dancing with all five senses. What about the aromatic whiff of years of family traditions, or the euphoric buoyancy of conversations and laughter as we reconnect. Oh the lights. We cannot forget the lights. The array of sometimes tastefully done lights that spark a feeling of life, and then there is the unwrapping of gifts, and not just the physical ones. It’s the cheer of the season. It’s the flourishing seed of hope.
It breaks my heart that not everyone gets to experience the picture I’ve just painted. There are folks laying on cold floors under bridges. There are children being separated from, or far away from family. There are broken hearts laid out on bathroom floors. There is sadness, loneliness and darkness in the alleys. For some the bustle of the season only adds to their pain, reminding them of what they do not have. In the midst of hope, many have lost hope, begging to take their last breath.
While we celebrate, let’s remember that this season is about love, and with love comes sacrifice. Love is action. It does not take much to brighten up another person’s day. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant either. Your smile is a gift, as is your time, and the cherry pie you love to bake so much. Your old clothes are valuable, as are the used toys laying about forgotten and unloved. Your leftovers are enough to feed another, and your words could be dessert. There is always something to give. Always.
If I could, I would give you the biggest hug, and you should know that my hugs are special. I never go half assed with them. It’s full on bear hug. You gon’ know that you are so loved. So valued. So worthy. That’s just what I do…😎
I pray that the joy of the season melts your heart into puddles of love, hope and cheer!
