Can you ‘catch’ the Holy Ghost?

For context, the variations of the phrase ‘caught the holy ghost’ heard in movies, shows and stand-up comedy inspired this post. The point, of course, is for laughs, but it is out of bounds. Anyway, that’s my opinion and I’ll tell you why.

To answer the question, NO.

The Holy Spirit is neither a ball nor a disease.

He is God’s Spirit.

As a precious gift, Luke 11:13, sent to us to be our helper. He is to be RECEIVED not caught.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Counselor, and Advocate. John 16:7. I can attest to this.

He strengthens. Eph. 3:16. Also very evident in my life.

When we trust in God the Father, His Spirit fills us with all joy, hope, and peace. Rom. 15:13. His Spirit is FREEDOM. 2 Cor. 3:17, and CONFIRMS we live in Him — God, and He in us. 1 John 4:13. We bear the GOOD fruits of love, kindness, gentleness, self-control, joy, peace, goodness, and forbearance when His Spirit dwells in us. Gal. 5:22.

The Holy Spirit is the POWERFUL, all sufficient, healing presence of God. He EMPOWERS us! 2 Tim. 1:7. He is GIVEN, not thrown. Rom. 5:5. We do not play catch with the Holy Spirit. We are led by Him. Gal. 5:25, Rom. 8:14, Ps. 143:10.

The Holy Spirit is WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. Eph. 1:17. No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit, 1 Cor. 2:11. Therefore, REVELATION and INTIMACY are impossible in the absence of His spirit.

The Holy Spirit is LIFE! Rom. 8:11. He TRANSFORMS you and I, from glory to glory. Receiving Him is the seal or mark of sonship. Rom. 8:15.

The Holy Spirit is a person, not a thing. He is REAL, not abstract. From the depths of Him, He fills. He dwells.

The word Holy distinguishes God’s Spirit. To mock what is holy by making Him a by-line in a comedic skit or movie scene for the pleasure of mere humans who are here today and gone tomorrow is disrespectful to the living and eternal God.

Can you catch the Holy Ghost (Spirit)? Acts 2:2 says suddenly there was a sound from heaven, like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. So, I’ll answer with a question. Can you catch wind? Do you even know for certain what direction the wind blows?

The person of the Holy Spirit is the power of God. He is God and He manifests in many forms — a dove, mighty winds, a fourth in the fire…

We live in crazy times, a sign of the last days. The world will be the world. However, it is never a good time to play with God and what is sacred to Him. Do not give the adversary — devil, satan, your enemy an inch, because he will take a mile. It may be mainstream, but it does not honor God. Someone may say it casually or in jest, but it does not please God. Don’t let the devil clown you.

God, His Spirit, and the son are one, and should be reverenced equally.

Dear Lord, please create in me a new heart. One that aches and longs for you. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my hearts please you. Help me heed to your corrections and love what you love. Humble me, Lord, so that I do not stumble or fall into the traps of the enemy. I pray I will experience you authentically. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for leading me in my everyday life, strengthening and empowering me to live out loud in love, peace, dominion, obedience, contentment and on purpose. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Happy Monyaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
Xo, Mel.
